If you live above ground, and have access to a television, computer, and/or smartphone, then the name, Joaquín Archivaldo “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera should ring a bell. But, just in case, here’s a little recap. He’s the recently recaptured Mexican drug lord who escaped from his high security Mexican prison last year. He was located after allegedly meeting with actors Sean Penn and Kate del Castillo. We know what you’re thinking: what does this have to do with drinking??? Well.
While it was first assumed that the actors met with El Chapo to discuss the making of a movie based on his story, Mexican officials have reason to believe that Del Castillo met with him to discuss her boutique tequila brand, Honor Del Castillo. Apparently, it’s a possibility that the actress and the leader of the world’s largest drug cartel were in business together, and that some of his drug money was laundered into her business.
GASP!
So, with all of this controversy and media coverage, of course Del Castillo’s self-named tequila is flourishing. People are stepping to the dark side and yearning for a taste of what it’s like to be the most wanted drug king pin in the world. The tequila, which Penn mentioned by name in his Rolling Stone retelling of the experience, was present at the meeting between these three musketeers. It’s already sparked a frenzy in Mexico, and when it debuts in the U.S. (any day now), we can expect much of the same.
