How can you not like something called “Fünf?”

 

It’s a self-professed “friendly” wine that is easy to buy (as in cheap — $5.99-$6.99), easy to open (screw top) and easy to say (no matter how much of it you drink). So much so, that it might be becoming the Diet Coke of wines?

 

“Funf” is german for “five” — cocktail hour. It comes in Sassy White, Sweet Red, Moscato and Sangria, uh, flavors.

 

Most importantly, it’s not total crap. Reviewers at snooth.com find the white, which is a Riesling, “Tart at first, with a gentle apple- or pear-like sweetness in the finish.”

 

Others, at weinsapf.com, though, poke some holes in it. “I did find the bitter element somewhat disturbing. Disturbing like an East German propaganda film.”

 

No wonder so many use it as a mixer for cocktails.

Fünf Mimosa

  • 3/4 cup Fünf Moscato, chilled
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • Mix three parts Fünf Moscato to one part of your favorite orange juice

 

Fünf Sweet Red Cooler

  • 4 oz. Fünf Sweet Red
  • 2 oz. lemon-lime soda
  • 2 oz. Ginger Ale
  • Squeezed juice from 1/2 lemon

 

Fünf Peach Spritzer

  • 1 oz. Peach Schnapps
  • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 4 oz. chilled Fünf Sassy White
  • Add a splash of club soda
  • Crushed ice
